Facial Treatment Puts Smile Back On AIDS Patients

Original Date of Air: April 5, 2004, NY1 TV

Kevin Jones has been HIV positive for the last 15 years. He's been on the cocktail for almost 10. A couple of years ago he noticed his face was thinning, practically wasting away.

“I felt like there was a sign on my forehead,” he says, “like there was something that said this man is HIV-positive.”

Thirty to 40 percent of people taking antiretroviral therapy will develop some form of facial wasting. No one knows why, but the drugs prescribed to keep patients alive also leave their mark – a loss of underlying fat and support to the face, in most cases from the cheekbone area.

“When this fat is lost, when it disappears, it can leave people with a very hollow, sunken and ill appearance,” says Dr. Douglas Senderoff, a plastic surgeon.

Over the years, there have been a few cosmetic treatments to correct facial wasting, including collagen, silicone and even transporting fat from other parts of the body. Most of them don't last.

Now, a product called Radiance is illuminating the faces of those suffering from AIDS.

Dr. Senderoff, who has treated over 100 patients with facial wasting, says Radiance has little or no side effects. “I find it to be effective, long-lasting easy to use, with a high satisfaction rate,” he says.

A spokesperson for the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery agreed, saying not only does it work, it lasts longer, three to five years.

What makes this filler last a few years versus just a few months is the fact that its calcium based. Basically, it has the same mineral in teeth and bones, and that's what prevents it from being absorbed into the body.

The treatment takes about 15 minutes and can cost up to $2,200 dollars. It is not covered by insurance, but for people like Kevin Jones, "putting on a good face" is now more than just a cliché.
